Lookout Mountain, Buffalo Bill's Grave, and Trail Ridge Road

I left this morning and headed out US6 toward Golden and Lookout Mountain.  Lookout Mountain is probably 1,000 feet above the surrounding landscape and it's in the "Front Range", as the foothills of the Rockies are called.  Here are a couple pics from the top of the mountain overlooking Golden:

Right in the center of the second picture is the Coor's Brewery complex if you can pick it out.

Also on Lookout Mountain is Buffalo Bill Cody's grave.  I never realized it, but Buffalo Bill was award the Medal of Honor for his performance as an Indian Scout during the Indian Wars.  To be honest, though, I believe Medals of Honor were given out much more freely during and just after the Civil War.  The grave site was actually very well-maintained, and, if you want to go, there's a museum and gift shop as well.

Anyway, pretty nice place and worth the stop.  After taking all this in, I continued on US6 through Clear Creek Canyon (where, I swear, the canyon walls were only about 75 feet apart in spots) and on to Idaho Springs and on down I-70 about 10 miles to Empire, where I picked up US40 west to Granby.  The ride up to Granby is very scenic and you can begin to see the mountains in the distance:

Granby sits on Lake Granby and, while it's a man-made lake, it is very scenic:

Trail Ridge Road runs through Rocky Mountain National Park and the start of the road is about 15 miles east of Granby itself.  The road is about 50 miles long and climbs to over 12,000 feet in elevation at its highest point.  Since much of the road is well above the tree line, there are beautiful views everywhere:

The last one was taken several miles before the summit. And I wondered why I was panting like a horse when I walked back to take the picture.  NO AIR!

Tomorrow I'm going to see some more of the tourist sights in the mountains and then on Wednesday, I'm headed over to Grand Junction.

Miles today:  269
