Provo, Utah to Flagstaff, Arizona

I left Provo about 5:45 this morning to head south on I-15.  I had seen on the news last night that the highway department was going to shut I-15 down to one lane going south somewhere south of Provo, and since I didn't know where that was, I wanted to get outta Dodge before the morning commuters showed up to a one-lane Interstate.  Sure enough, about 20 miles south of where I was staying, there was a 10-mile or so stretch of Interstate that was down to one lane.  Sure glad I missed the fun there.  According to the news, it's going to be down to one lane for about a year.  Then, I guess they'll start expanding the North-bound lanes.

I headed down I-15 about 170 miles or so to SR20, which took us over the mountain passes and onto US89, which I followed all the way to Flagstaff,  Actually a pretty ride, but like a lot of the roads out here, it's pretty desolate with not a lot of towns or people, for that matter.  I was getting rained on most of the morning, so I didn't stop to take any pictures until well after noon.  Here are a couple from along US89 south of the little town of Panguitch (honest, the real name!):

After I had taken these couple pictures, the weather set in again and I just kept on truckin' until it finally cleared up pretty much for the rest of the day when I was around Lake Powell and the little resort town of Page, AZ.  Here are a couple pictures of the area just north of the Glen Canyon Dam, which forms Lake Powell:

Here, if you look closely at the center of the picture, you can see the Glen Canyon Dam itself:

And here you can see more of Lake Powell itself:

Further down US89 near the little town of Cameron, we came through some mountains into a low valley with some beautiful scenery:

And then in the valley below:

That's pretty much it for today.  I'll be heading down to Phoenix tomorrow and will be spending the next week or so with Pat and our son, Patrick, before heading out again late next week.  So, the blogs won't be a daily ritual for the next few days, but check in occasionally and hopefully there'll be some updates.

Miles today:  499
